Coffee Dye Selvedge: Japanese Denim Dyed With Real Roasted Coffee Beans
Sometimes, the most creative ideas come from the unlikeliest of places, like a happy accident. Our latest creation, the Coffee Dyed Selvedge, is a perfect example. While the idea of denim dyed with natural ingredients isn’t new to us the idea for our coffee-dyed denim came from a mistake during a meeting with our mill in Japan.
As we were looking over swatches of fabric, there were plates of snacks and, of course, cups of coffee everywhere. At one point, one of us accidentally knocked over a coffee cup, and it spilled all over a piece of PFD denim, which stands for "prepared for dye." This type of white denim is designed to absorb dye very quickly. We joked, "Oh, coffee dye!”. To our surprise, the mill responded, "Yes, we can do that." And just like that, an accident was transformed into an idea for a fun, new pair of jeans.
The weft yarn, the horizontal yarns woven into the fabric, is dyed using a solution made from real medium roast ground-up coffee beans. As you wear these jeans and they develop natural wear and tear, you'll see those brown weft threads become more visible, especially in areas of abrasion. And, like any raw denim, the warp yarns will fade over time, creating a unique, personalized look.
We've extended the coffee theme to the finishing touches as well, with a coffee coloured selvedge ID, matching stitching, and a coffee coloured leather patch. All of our hems are finished with a Union Special 432000G bulldog chain stitch, a signature detail for us. At 12.5 ounces per square yard, these jeans are easy to wear all year round. The fabric has a smooth feel and a short break-in time, so you can start wearing them right away.
The Coffee-Dyed Selvedge is available in Super Guy, Weird Guy, Easy Guy, True Guy and Strong Guy.
