Sea Island Selvedge : The Sea Island Cotton Story
The Sea Island Selvedge is crafted from 12 ounce Japanese selvedge denim woven with Virgin American Sea Island Cotton. The cotton is an ultra rare extra long staple variety known for its silky luster, uniform texture, cashmere like softness, and remarkable durability. Its origins trace back to the West Indies in the 1600s, where its unique qualities made it among the most coveted textiles of its time.
By the 1800s, Sea Island Cotton had spread to American colonies. However, a devastating beetle infestation in the 1920s nearly wiped it out completely, almost bringing its cultivation to an end.
In 2015, a remarkable revival began. Seeds preserved in a vault were planted in the high desert near the Texas New Mexico border. The cotton flourished in this environment, benefiting from extended sunlight and cool nights. The resulting strain is genetically identical to the original but may even exceed it in strength and fiber length.
From this American grown Sea Island Cotton, Japanese mills create denim that feels rugged and crisp on the outside yet smooth and silky on the inside. That contrast elevates the wearing experience with a sophisticated balance of durability and comfort.
Craftsmanship is evident in every detail of these jeans. They feature contrast stitching, a copper brown leather patch, silver metallic hardware, a hidden selvedge coin pocket, and a pink vintage style selvedge ID. Each pair is cut, sewn, and assembled in Canada in the last remaining Naked & Famous Denim factory, ensuring meticulous quality control throughout.
This denim draws inspiration from 1920s era styles, inviting us to imagine an alternate history in which Sea Island Cotton had become the norm. In that world, silky soft, ultra durable jeans could have redefined American denim standards.
Beyond its luxurious feel and artistry, this denim speaks to a broader narrative. The decline of American selvedge production has been steep, with many iconic mills closing and most high‑end selvedge now produced in Japan. Against that landscape, Sea Island Selvedge represents a rare convergence of heritage, innovation, and global craftsmanship.
