Here is the current issue of CRACKER YOUR WARDROBE magazine…

The shirts are made just a few doors down from our head office in Montreal in an old family run factory that have been knitting circular fabric and sewing t-shirts and underwear for 70 years. Both the fabric and sewing is all done on site. The loopwheeling/circular knitting machines are the original ones they have been using for decades. We love the old-world quality and heritage behind their garments.

The fit is a 1950s style “Muscle T” with fitted short sleeves and of course a tubular body. The body and collar have no seams as the fabric is circular knit.

The yarn is a double ring-spun cotton and is nice and soft and heavy too. We are starting with 4 great basic colors: White, Pale Grey, Dark Indigo and Black.

Check out some photos of the factory in the 1950s… It still looks like this now! (minus the vintage haircuts…)

All 4 colors are available now at most N&F retailers!

Also, my brother was kind enough to buy me this book, Pornogami, for my bday, so I may have to make the first ever selvedge denim origami vagina! Hooray!

We bought some nice polka dot chambray fabric and had some extra so we cut them into bowties. Always made with vintage NYC-made hardware from the 1950s. Clip-on and nerdy as usual… Just the way we like it!

We also have our original indigo, black and grey denim bowties, and some soft colorful chambray ones as well.

More about the Red Core denim…
This denim was chosen for the contest because it is built to fade in an interesting way. It’s indigo denim that fades wil red marks! This fade effect is created by the innovative dyeing process. First we vat dye the warp yarns in a red reactive dye which is a permanent dye that is absorbed to the core of the yarn. Then, we rope-dye the same yarns in indigo, which creates an indigo color yarn with a red core. As you beat up the denim the indigo dye chips away and the red core is revealed.

We would really like to thank everyone who entered and who had fun beating up their indigo/indigo 14.5oz selvedge denim jeans for this contest! I was curious as to how these jeans would fade due to the warp and weft yarns both being rope-dyed indigo, and I’m very happy to see some amazing results!

Everyone who entered automatically wins a little prize. This time we have decided to give away a denim bowtie or necktie to everyone who entered. (We’ll mail those out later this week.) GRAND PRIZE – Mike F – His jeans were the most transformed, had great contrast fading everywhere, mean combs, and the fit was perfect too. Plus his dog looks pretty cool. Congratulations Mike!

1st RUNNER UP – Frodo – Hailing all the way from Korea, Frodo showed us some seriously impressive fades, and by far the most odd (but really innovative and neat) back pocket fade we’ve ever seen! Frodo’s real name is Kyoung No Lee but he says “Nickname is Frodo. Why?? I’m be short HaHaHa.” I asked him how he got that crazy back pocket fade and he showed us the photo below where he created his own unique hard-paper die and kept it in his back pocket for 6 months! I have no idea how he actually made that hard-paper die but he’s clearly one crafty dude! Check out his photos below both before and after wash.

2nd RUNNER UP – Anthony C – Just great overall fades. My sales manager flipped-out over the superb contrast and texture that he got on the front on his jeans. Well done Anthony.

I’m often asked if the jeans are actually wearable. The answer is YES! I’ve worn a pair for a few days and it was doable, but I’m pretty bony and my hips were a bit marked up afterwards. In this photo below you can see one of the great staff members at colette boutique in Paris wearing his pair of 32oz jeans. They look amazing on him! He says after just 2 days of wear they are broken in and comfy. (I think he may be tougher than me.) Notice how he’s got a thick belt over the super thick patch!…

I thought it would also be fun to share some photos of the actual sewing process, so here goes!… These photos are not in any particular order and I have 3000 photos of the production, so I just randomly chose a few…

The amount of hammering and ‘bashing’ involved in order to make the seams sew-able was extraordinary! A 2-sided mallet and the back of a screwdriver were both used to tame the beast that is 32oz denim…

One of the most difficult parts to sew is the feed-off center back yoke seam. That’s the point where several pieces are joined together, and you can see in the 4th photo below how thick that seam is. It’s almost a full inch thick! Crazy. This operation is always done by the most skilled worker. Good thing the Union Special held up as well as her fingers!
